Mercedes have always been less upmarket at home than away. They're big into the taxi business and do trucks and buses as well.

It honestly doesn't seem to be hurting them at all here (in Paris). I see tons of A Classes and B Classes, yet the S Class is far and away the car of choice for the chauffeured set. Not to mention the ludicrous amount of E class taxis. Audi also has small cars like the A1, and BMWs 1 Series hatchback is pretty popular around these parts. As an expat I can't speak about the differences in the way these brands are perceived by Europeans, but it certainly seems like offering smaller, cheaper cars with much more basic interiors and smaller engines has not substantially impacted sales of the more expensive models.

I'm starting to see a few A-Classes pop up around where I live. A45 AMGs I mean.

Yeah the difference in the European market cars is pretty startling. I'm an american but I've lived in France for six months now.

You speak French so I'm sure it's a lot easier for you. I noticed right when we got to our first shop that it was an inconvenience to take our order and service us. I've never experienced that before

Yeah it's tough getting around sometimes. I still make tons of mistakes and occasionally just have to try and get my point across in English. At least learning to cope with situations like that is a valuable skill! What brings you to Euroland and where will you be traveling to?

Ooh sounds like a blast. I may be going to Prague with a friend in a couple weeks. I did Turin and Milan at the end of January and had an awesome time. The Piazza San Carlo in Turin is beautiful, although it won't be filled with rally cars when you're there : P
I don't know if you'd be into this, but if you're looking to do any shopping in Milan I would recommend finding an A & D Andrew's Ties store. They sell ties, scarves, gloves, belts, cuff links, that sort of thing. It's all really nice stuff made in Italy, but it's not some big name haute couture designer brand so the prices aren't totally absurd. Their stuff isn't dirt cheap, but for example I was able to get a 100% virgin wool scarf woven in Italy for like 60€. That shit would've been like 300€ at Prada. I also got a pair of gloves and a belt, both of which are high quality and come with a good recommendation.
Enjoy your trip!
